Yesterday, more than 20,000 people perished of extreme poverty

The New York Times > Opinion > Editorial: Thousands Died in Africa Yesterday: "Yesterday, more than 20,000 people perished of extreme poverty"

This country is going to spend more than $400 billion on the military this year, and another $100 billion or so for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. But that amount is never going to buy Americans peace if the government continues to spend an anemic $16 billion - the Pentagon budget is 25 times that size - in foreign aid that addresses the plight of the poorest of the world's poor.

Or, as Tony Campolo is fond of saying to Christian audiences, "Tonight thousands of people on this earth will die of starvation. Most of you don't give a shit. And most of you are more upset with the fact that I said 'shit' than that thousands of people will die tonight."

I find it so absurd that I constantly struggle not to get as fat as a house, while others die every day from starvation. But somehow, I still can't find an answer to the problem. I wish it were as simple as shipping food, but it's the corrupt powers and principalities of this world that work to deprive people of their very lives. GRR.
